Four swimmers from the U swimming team represented the Utes at the U.S. National Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., this past weekend.
As a team, Utah finished 61st with seven total points after Evan Castro and Tessa Greegor competed in the 100 meter breaststroke “B” finals to score the points for the U.
Castro finished second in the “B” final of the 100 breaststroke with a 1-minute, 5.75-second time, good enough to place him 10th overall in the event. Greegor finished sixth in the “B” final of the 100 breaststroke with a 1:13.97 time, also placing her in 14th place overall.
Cody Rempfer finished second in the “C” final of the 200 individual medley with a 2:10.93 time, which also placed him 18th overall in the event.
Neringa Statkeviciute failed to make the finals of the 50 freestyle after she finished 35th in the preliminary round with a 27.26 time. She also didn’t make the finals in the 200 freestyle last Thursday, after she finished 55th with a 2:08.47 time.
Being credited with bringing in the one of the finest freshmen classes in U history, coach Mike Litzinger has stated these national invitations are helping to put Utah on the national swimming map. Three of the four swimmers at the nationals were freshmen. Greegor, Rempfer and Castro are all only in their first year. Only Statkeviciute has more collegiate experience, being a sophomore.
