SALT LAKE CITY?A Layton man who pocketed $47,000 after claiming his relatives died in the World Trade Center attacks is facing criminal charges in New York for lying about his loss.
The New York County District Attorney’s office charged Ricardo Frutos last week. He is among 22 people who are accused of filing false claims for compensation after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Frutos is accused of falsely claiming that his brother, his niece and her husband died in the attack.
Relief organizations have paid $760,455 to 15 people who now are suspected of lying to get the money.
