Coming off a crushing win over Idaho State, the U men’s tennis team will travel north to Ogden for a match with in state rival Weber State today.
The match, which begins at 1 p.m., will be the second match in three days for the Utes, who just came off 12 days of rest.
The Utes pounded the Bengals of Idaho St. 6-1 at the Eccles Tennis Center Wednesday night.
The Utes’ only winning struggles have come on the road, as they are a perfect 7 0 at home, but are only 3-7 on the road.
Another aspect the Utes must face is that, except for inclement weather, all the matches will be outdoors. The Utes are used to playing at the indoor Eccles Tennis Center. Playing outside could play a factor for the netters.
Following their match-up with the Wildcats, the Utes will get another week off, then head back out onto the road where they will begin conference play in Albuquerque against New Mexico and then conference leading Air Force Academy.
Corrie Scheepers got back on his winning ways by defeating Vasico Devidze of Idaho St., 6 1, 6-1, in Utah’s last meet. Scheepers, who is the Utes No. 1 singles players with Dave Mercier not participating in singles play because of injury, had lost his previous four singles matches before the victory against Devidze.
Mercier has only been playing in doubles play because of a knee injury and has yielded the No. 1 spot mostly to the senior Scheepers.
Senior Nik Yip has also seen time at the No. 1 spot and has a 1-2 record there. Scheepers is 6-3 in the No. 1 spot.
In doubles play, Mercier and Yip lead the team with an 11-4 record in the No. 1 spot. The combination of Daniel Carlsson and Tyler Poulson are 8-8 in the No. 2 spot.
When the Utes return home in mid-April, they will play at the Canyon Racquet Club near Big Cottonwood Canyon for their final three matches on outdoor courts.
