It’s a common scene: beer cans on the lawns outside houses on the U’s Greek Row. And it’s one that may become a lot more common.
Under pressure from U officials, the U’s Interfraternity Council has ruled that if a frat wants a project to count as philanthropy, it can’t be picking up their own beer cans.
“It’s time that Greek Row just took it up a level,” said IFC President Cory Peterson.
Common philanthropy projects include taking children to the zoo, raising money for Amnesty International, spraying beer on homosexuals and spending time at AIDS hospices.
Some are against the plan to forbid counting beer can cleanup as philanthropy, such as local housing agencies.
When frat house lawns are free of beer cans, it helps offset the massive devaluation of property in the neighborhood.
“You think it’s easy to sell a house in this area?” said a real estate agent who spoke on condition of anonymity. “I mean, [Delta Gammas] are easy, but pushing property here?it’s a nightmare!”
