After a good start to the season, the U track & field outdoor team will head south to Provo to compete in the BYU Invitational, starting Saturday.
However, the talent pool will be diluted, as many of the runners that would compete in the tournament for the Cougars are heading to Texas or Stanford for more elite races.
Last week was a very successful start to the outdoor schedule for Utah, as six U runners broke personal records in their respective events at the Stanford Invitational. They included Nellie Hammons in the 800 meters, Nephi Tyler in the 1,500 meters, Lion Gallegos in the 10,000 meter, and Elise Greenwood and B.J. Christensen in the steeplechase.
Not only did these six runners break their own personal records, but three Ute runners that ran unattached, Colby Frazier, Jennifer Brusch and Brent Moore, all broke personal records.
The BYU Invitational will be the first tournament the Utes have competed in that will exclusively contain college teams, as last week included high school as well as professional runners.
Continuing success at the BYU Invitational will be possible, since many of the best runners will not be present.
