SALT LAKE CITY?A staff writer for the Deseret News who reported on a diesel fuel spill at his building has been charged with failing to notify the city fire department about the spill.
City prosecutors charged Jerry Spangler with a misdemeanor violation of the state’s “unauthorized discharges” law.
Prosecutors did not charge the newspaper or its building managers, the diesel fuel supplier who caused the spill or the firm called to mop it up.
Spangler’s story quoted a hazardous-material trainer for the state Division of Comprehensive Emergency Management saying somebody should report the spill to the fire department. That official didn’t report it, either.
