The posters are gone, the fliers have been thrown away and no one will approach you with a free doughnut and a “tip” about who deserves your vote in the up-coming election.
But the fight for a better student government isn’t over yet.
Sure, Impact party candidates Bill Edwards and Randall Lloyd have won the presidential and vice presidential race for the Associated Students of the University of Utah. True, the Senate and Assembly members have beena chosen. Still, a lot of decisions are yet to be made in the student government.
Importantly, the new administration still has to pick its Executive Cabinet. The Cabinet is a group of some of the most powerfully positioned student officers in ASUU.
The new administration could fill the open slots with its own friends and in-party candidates who didn’t win. Or, it could cross party lines and mix up a new cast of characters, creating a diverse and more representative staff.
The two parties in the final election had similar platforms. The other two parties, which lost in the primaries, were interested in very different issues in their campaigns. They appealed to different students.
Indeed, the final election had fewer votes cast than the primary election?a rare occurrence suggesting that many people who voted in the primaries for specific parties didn’t vote in the final because they didn’t feel it was worth their time. The new administration would do well to give these voters a voice.
The current administration sets a good example in this respect. Ben Lowe and Mike Nelson, this year’s president and vice president, hired Jay Hart as their chief of staff. He was the campaign manager for last year’s Innovation Party, which lost in the final elections.
Edwards and Lloyd should similarly pick and choose among the applicants for Executive Cabinet positions, rather than simply rewarding their own loyal fans with the posh positions. And students who feel they lack representation should take matters into their own hands and apply. Applications, available in 234 Union or online at www.asuu.utah.edu, are due April 19.
