Throughout the campus, students, faculty and staff are wearing yellow Stars of David worn to commemorate the more than six million Jews who died in the Holocaust.
The stars are part of the U’s annual Days of Remembrance, which has hosted activities throughout the week. Tonight, Professor John Roth will deliver the week’s keynote address in the Marriott Library’s Gould Auditorium. Roth will speak on the issues involved with the role of Christian churches during the Holocaust.
The U has observed Days of Remembrance for more than 15 years.
“This is just one of the many ways the U celebrates the lives of its constituents,” said Karen Dace, associate vice president for diversity. “I think it’s always been a vital program that brings campus and community together.”
A committee of campus and community members arranged the activities.
History Professor Ron Smelser serves as chairman of the committee.
Every year, Smelser teaches a one-day workshop on the history of the Holocaust. He held the workshop in the Jewish Community Center on Wednesday, which students took for one credit hour.
“I think one of our goals of the commemoration is to educate,” Dace said. “I think there’s always the goal to know history as to not allow it to happen again, and look at our present situations and see the similarities.”
