For the second time this year, bad weather has kept the U softball team from playing Utah State. Yesterday’s game with the Aggies was canceled due to too much snow in Logan, Utah.
The poor weather may also cancel Utah’s game with Cal State Northridge, scheduled for Thursday. Northridge is in the Big West Conference and is supposed to come to Utah to play the Aggies and Utes this week. If Utah State ground crews cannot ready the field for this weekend, CSN will not travel at all to Utah, thus canceling the Utes’ game tomorrow.
The game with the Aggies postponed from March 20 will be made up on April 23. Yesterday’s game will not be made up.
Here is what the team is up to:
Pitchers and Catchers
Heather Bowlin leads the Utes on the rubber with a 2.82 earned run average and 96 strikeouts. Bowlin is 10-15 on the season, and 4-2 in the conference.
Jennifer Pursell is throwing well also, as she has racked up a 9-15 record, 3-1 MWC. Her ERA is 3.19 and has thrown 95 strikeouts in 158 innings.
Behind the plate for the Utes, Christa Pfeninger has caught most of the games for the Utes, receiving praise from U coach Mona Stevens, even though she hasn’t hit all that well, with only a .157 average, with 13 hits in 83 at bats.
Infielders
Shortstop Melissa Stahnke continues to lead the U in home runs, with 10, and is second on the team with a .327 batting average. She does lead the team in errors committed, however, with 14.
Third baseman Lyndsey Trevis is rebounding from a rough start hitting. She now has a .265 average with four home runs and 24 runs batted in. She has 10 errors committed in the field.
First baseman Niki Hayhurst is in the same boat as Trevis, trying to bounce back from a rough start. She is hitting .232 with three home runs and 16 RBI.
Second baseman Michele Larsen has struggled at the plate. She hits .197, with 28 hits, two doubles and eight RBI. She has the fewest number of errors of starting infielders with seven, however.
Outfielders
Center fielder Molly McLean leads the team in batting, at .344. She has 56 hits, 10 doubles, four home runs and 21 RBI as leadoff hitter for the U.
Right fielder Masie Ota is hitting .275 in the No. 2 spot in the rotation. She has 39 hits with two triples. She has only committed one error.
Left fielder Traci Keller hits .165, but is improving as the year goes on. She has 15 hits, two of them doubles and one triple. She also has only committed one error.
Designated Players
Angie Kenney is hitting .271, with 23 hits and three doubles. She is also second in stolen bases with six.
