SALT LAKE CITY?The Utah Department of Workforce Services has told its food-stamp program managers they cannot threaten to report undocumented immigrants to the immigration service when they apply for aid for their U.S.-born children.
The department specifically ordered its Magna office to remove a sign making such a threat.
The federal food-stamp program allows parents who want to receive food stamps for their children to declare themselves “nonapplicants”?meaning they are not applying for themselves. Such parents are not required to give information about their immigration status or their Social Security Number.
