In the last home match at the U for seniors David Mercier, Corrie Scheepers and Nik Yip, the U men’s tennis team will host Portland State, most likely at the Eccles Tennis Center today.
It was scheduled to be at the Canyon Racquet Club, but since Mother Nature has had different plans as of late, the match will likely be moved to the Eccles Tennis Center.
The match won’t have any say in what happens in the Mountain West Conference for the Utes, but it will serve as a practice round as the Utes prepare for the conference tournament next week in Las Vegas.
Mercier and Yip are currently ranked No. 27 in the nation in doubles play and recently beat San Diego State’s Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo, who were ranked No. 3 in the nation. Maiberger and Redondo won one of the collegiate grand slams at the All-American Tournament last fall.
“[Mercier and Yip] have really had an excellent year,” said U assistant coach Graeme Cox. “They have an excellent chance to go to the NCAA Tournament as a regional representative.”
Mercier, Utah’s No. 1 player, will play in doubles but will sit out singles competition to rest his elbow.
The match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. this afternoon.
