SALT LAKE CITY?Trespassing charges against two people caught distributing evangelical literature on the Mormon Church’s Main Street Plaza have been dismissed pending outcome of a suit over plaza restrictions.
The Rev. Kurt Van Gorden appeared before a judge Wednesday, but a city prosecutor dismissed the charges pending the outcome of the civil case.
The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is weighing constitutionality of the rules of the plaza, which was part of Main Street before the LDS Church bought it.
The American Civil Liberties Union contends the church’s restrictions of the property’s use are unconstitutional.
