The U football team’s spring practice session comes to a close on Saturday, and the Utes plan to end it in style.
For the first time in coach Ron McBride’s Utah tenure, the team will conclude the spring with a full-blown intra-squad game.
The “Red-White Game” takes place Saturday afternoon at East High School, with action getting underway at 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend and admission is free of charge.
Rosters for the two teams were “drafted” on Thursday by celebrity coaches Bernie Machen, the U’s president, and Rev. France Davis, an adjunct associate professor in the ethnic studies department. Every uninjured Ute will play in the game.
Traditional rules apply, with the exceptions of there are no kickoff or punt returns, the ball is automatically placed on the 20-yard line following touchdowns and field goals, and quarters last just 12 minutes in duration and halftime five minutes.
U coach Ron McBride is looking forward to the event.
“Saturday is going to be a really fun day for our players and fans,” he said. “It’s a way for the players to put on their game uniforms and enjoy competition.”
Following the game, players will sign autographs and take part in a punt, pass and kick session with attending children.
