The U men’s basketball team has gone Down Under to fill its final scholarship spot for the 2002-03 season.
Coach Rick Majerus announced yesterday that Andrew Bogut, a 6-foot-9 forward/center that played for the Australian Institute of Sports, will become the latest Ute.
Bogut, a native of Endeavour Hills, Victoria, Australia, starred on the AIS team that played in the Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Germany in early April.
Bogut started all four games, averaging 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds.
“Andrew has a fine upside because of his good hands, fine shooting touch, great feel for the game and ability to run the floor,” Majerus said. “No question, he must get stronger [at 205 pounds], but we think he will be a fine addition.”
Because of the Australian school calendar, Bogut will not join the team until December. Last year, the U’s first regular season game was on Nov. 1.
Bogut will join UVSC transfer Marc Jackson and incoming freshmen Tim Drisdom, Bryant Markson and Richard Cheney.
The five recruits will mesh with a team that returns only five active players from last year’s NCAA Tournament team, plus transfer Tim Frost and redshirt freshman Chris Jackson.
