The end of the year dance scheduled for tonight is postponed.
After a week of advertising and free bagels, only eight students had purchased tickets.
“We were expecting 20 to 30 people,” said Chad Dilley, a member of the Freshman Council of the Associated Students of the University of Utah, the group organizing the dance.
The council originally planned for 400 to 500 students to attend the dance.
“It was a slight difference,” Dilley said.
The council promoted the dance as an end of the year dance, but holding the event so close to finals was not the council’s idea. Today was the only day the skybox of the Rice-Eccles Stadium was available for a dance. Besides being so close to finals, the dance also conflicted with the Student Alumni Association’s house party, an annual free event offering food, entertainment and prizes held in the Alumni House tonight.
“I think it was really bad timing,” Dilley said.
The council decided to postpone the dance instead of completely cancel it because it did not want to lose the deposit on the skybox. Jessica Judkins, the incoming senior class president, will take over the project in the fall.
“I really believe in this dance, it’s a great thing,” said Rick Pehrson, vice president of Freshman Council. “We will be able to do it next year when we’re not competing with SAA and finals.”
Students can get a full refund for the tickets they purchased by going to the ASUU office today.
