On May 9, the Associated Students of the University of Utah’s new Student Senate and Assembly maintained K-UTE’s 2 percent portion of the student activity fee.
Representatives held the meeting following a weekend hearing at the ASUU Supreme Court that overturned an earlier vote to cut the station’s funding.
On April 18, the former Student Senate passed a bill which eliminated the guaranteed 2 percent clause from Redbook, ASUU’s policy manual.
Following the meeting, U law student Jonathan Jemming filed an appeal to the ASUU Supreme Court, arguing the decision was unconstitutional. Only 32 members of the 48-seat Assembly were present to vote, and of the 18 votes in favor, the court ruled it fell short of the necessary 25-vote majority. In the Senate, the bill passed by an 8-4 margin.
Former student body president Ben Lowe drafted two versions of the 2002-2003 budget before he left office to account for the elimination of funds to the Student Broadcast Council. The new student government postponed voting on K-UTE’s funding until later in the school year, and instead opted to approve Lowe’s second budget proposal, which includes the broadcast council being funded at 2 percent.
