With the Spring Semester in the books, it is time to hand out academic honors for several athletic teams on campus.
Here is a look at the academic accolades for various athletic programs.
Gymnastics
For the 2001-2002 school year, the U gymnasts finished with a 3.7036 GPA. Kylee Wagner, Lindsay Tanner, Annie Medcalf, Theresa Kulikowski, Gritt Hofmann, Deidra Graham, Shannon Bowles and Kim Allan all earned scholastic All-American honors by receiving a 3.5 GPA or better.
For Spring Semester, the team recorded a 3.576 team GPA, with Bowles, Hofmann, Kulikowski and Medcalf earning 4.0s.
Kulikowski and Wagner will both return for their senior years already having graduated. Kulikowski completed her undergraduate requirements in May. She will start graduate work in the fall.
Football
Led by freshman Morgan Scalley with a perfect 4.0, 43 members of the U football team earned a 3.0 or better, and 10 were named to the Dean’s List.
Three players who were not academically eligible to play last fall received a 3.0 or better for Spring Semester. Sione Havili, a sophomore running back, made the Dean’s List. The other two athletes were Lynzell Jackson and Marquess Ledbetter.
Men’s Tennis
Six Utes earned a 3.0 or better to qualify for the honor roll. They were Kaisorn Chaichana, Tobia Tangberg, Tyler Poulson, Nik Yip, Jon Engelbrecht and Corrie Scheepers. Chaichana, Tangberg and Poulson all earned a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Baseball
Utes Matt Ciaramella, T.R. Gourley and Sean Overholt qualified for the Dean’s List, while six other Utes made the Spring Semester academic honor roll.
Swimming and Diving
Both the men’s and women’s swim teams were recognized by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for their academic efforts.
The women’s team earned a 3.08 team GPA, and it had three Dean’s List appointees in Melissa Chamberlin, Rebecca Gerber and Rachel Rudd. In all, 12 women’s team members made the honor roll.
Freshman Jorge Amorim’s 4.0 GPA was tops for the men, who had seven swimmers make the honor roll.
University Athletic Director Chris Hill was pleased with the progress made by all the U’s athletes.
“This year we have really stepped it up, with more teams increasing their GPAs and efforts.
“The bottom line is the student athletes have to take advantage of the services we offer and they have done that,” Hill said.
