I’m not exactly sure what Casey Jacketta was getting at with her article about Prozac and Utah, “Utahns are High on Prozac and Low on Life,” in the August 22 Chronicle.
She hinted that perhaps the phenomenon of high prozac consumption in Utah could be explained by the peculiarities of the LDS church, but then gives results of a professional study that suggest exactly the opposite. It seems as though she is afraid to directly offend anyone, because she says that the study, which basically showed that active members of the LDS Church are less depressed than inactive members, can easily be applied to any person of any faith.
This is a presumptuous extrapolation, because many of those inactive Mormons surely were active in other faiths. I finished reading the column unsure what exactly Jacketta’s opinion was.
