To the editor: As a former co-director of Terra Firma, the U of U student environmental organization, I am excited to see Terra Firma already working hard to educate and gain participation from the too often complacent student body at the University of Utah. Along with the Utah Wind Power Campaign, Terra Firma is working to bring wind-generated electricity to the University of Utah. The U of U Wind Power Campaign is asking students to take an easy, pro-active step toward environmental sustainability. By giving an extra $1 per semester in student fees, student would generate funding for the U to purchase wind power for the campus. $1 could buy a coffee or a bagel or some fries perhaps, or it could offset the 2.7 million pounds of carbon dioxide that would enter our atmosphere through conventional coal powered electricity generation. Is $1 too much to ask for such a landmark statement from U students? If you are interested in getting involved in this campaign sit in on a Terra Firma meeting, stop by their table Mondays at the Union Building, or you can email me at [email protected].
