Editors: Parents know the surest way of teaching values is to model the appropriate behavior for their children. If U administrators expect their students to abide by an honor code, they too need to model the values inherent in such a code–honesty, accountability, integrity, courage–for it to be legitimate. If the U strives for integrity on campus, it must begin with Administration’s own commitment to it. Repeatedly I have asked administrators to take firm steps to protect employees from unscrupulous personnel practices resulting in employee loss of job and reputation. Each time I received only silence. Unaccountability, failure to keep one’s word to employees, dishonesty in dealing with them, and irresponsibility are serious problems which Administration desperately needs to address. Turning a blind eye to deception will not eliminate it, but it may increase its growth. How can administrators ask students to sign a code which stresses honesty and accountability if they do not first demand the same of their own? A double standard should not and cannot be allowed.Christina Jackson Gully – Ex-class 1965
