I wish to comment on the recent article “The Chronicle’s View: Culture Shock a Culture Crock?” addressing culture week. I think it very unfair of the author to criticize the event so harshly. The criticism of Asia Day for example, yes Asia covers many countries and a wonderfully diverse group of cultures. But to accurately represent them all in one hour of activities is impossible. The entertainment and activities provided were based on the availability of performers. I do not think the author considered how much thought, planning, and work went into the event of Culture Shock. Each group that organized the events for each day were either members of that culture, or made every effort to involve corresponding student organizations to represent their cultures as accurately as possible. I suggest the author and The Chronicle rethink statements that criticize an activity they only watch from a distance. In my opinion there is much more to journalism than finding fault in activities with good motives.
