Dear Editor:
I agree with Daniel Thatcher’s opinion in his Nov. 15 column, “Gospel of Republicanism Needs Revision” that there needs to be opposition in all things.
May I remind him that Chris Cannon’s unopposed campaign in Utah’s 3rd Congressional District is not the fault of the GOP or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is the Democratic Party’s fault.
Also, could it be that the increase in the number of Utahns that identify themselves with the GOP is due to the fact that the party reflects Utah’s core political values and not its religious ones?
Left-minded people all around the country are still baffled by the past election. Many have said that America was duped.
But this simply isn’t the case. Most Americans favor a strong national defense, are deeply concerned with national security and align themselves with a conservative political philosophy. That is why the GOP took control of the Senate and that is why most Utahns identify with the Republican Party.
I shiver every time I hear the phrase ,”It’s hard to be a Democrat and a good member of the LDS Church.” It’s hard to be a good member of the LDS church, period! I don’t think that religion plays as big a part in Utah politics as some people think. Take the Thomas-Bishop race in the 1st Congressional District, for example. Both candidates were members of the LDS church in good standing. Yet Bishop had an overwhelming victory and it wasn’t because he was a better member of the church.
