I am very discouraged by The Chronicle’s view on the wind power campaign in its Nov. 15 editorial “Wind Power? Not Right Now.”
Stating that it is unfair to ask students to pay as little as $1 per semester to benefit wind power in Salt Lake City is quite ridiculous. As a student who scrapes by to make ends meet, I dread the idea of tuition increases and extra student fees just as much as anybody else. However, it is extremely self-centered and ignorant to assume that students could not come up with the suggested $1 to benefit a great and revolutionary cause that would eventually save us all money and benefit the environment we inhabit.
I am sure that students spend much more than that on a single trip to the bar, a concert or renting a movie. Let’s be a little more honest about our idea of the “starving student.” I agree that there are other ways to fund the wind power campaign, but I feel that your argument discourages the importance of positive environmental changes, and minimalizes the power that we have as students to facilitate those changes.
Please, let’s put our lives in perspective here! Stating that wind power is a great idea with poor timing is an empty excuse. Wind power is not an idealistic fantasy to be put off into the future when financial times are “better” for students. I ask that everyone take a moment to re-evaluate his or her priorities, to wake up from his or her self-centered dream state and realize that the only time for wind power is now!
