Dear Editor:
I was somewhat disturbed by the recent article published in the Chronicle regarding an offense made by a member of one student political party to another. I will quickly admit that I have no idea of what was said in the offensive exchange, and that I also have no assosiation with any of the parties. However, where in a student constitution is there anything against rude language? Is there? It is my belief that politicians are supposed to have “thick skin.” They are supposed to be able to be able to continue on in their pursuit despite the rude comments, or any mud that is flung in their way. If a student leader shatters when a rude comment is made, or when the chronicle ridicules one of their ideas, are they really a leader? I believe a leader is one who can stay above the slinging of mud a look clearly at what they want to accomplish. They don’t get bogged down by the muck of politics. A true leader inspires those they work with by maintaining an undeviated course towards their vision and goals. If they get bogged down by the muck, the whole party gets bogged down.
I feel sorry for this Vice-Presidential candidate who was offended, but I would encourage this candidate to look into other areas of campus to get involved if they can’t handle a little mud flung in their face. Unfortunately, it is the nature of the game. As a student I would much rather see candidates focused on seeking student interest, and finding out what we want, than a campaign who is criticizing or trying to disqualify another campaign.
So to those running for office this is a challenge: Can you rise above the slinging of the mud and focus on what you want to accomplish? Can you show to our student body that you are a true leader dedicated to a clear vision? If not, I would question your eligibility to run for office. Stand tall as a leader and show those who follow you that you have a purpose: To better students lives, not to disqualify or ridicule another party.
Sincerely,
Disturbed Student
