Editor:Thomas Carlyle once said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” We cannot stand idly by and let the United States put an estimated 500,000 Iraqi lives and thousands of United States soldiers’ lives at risk so that we can take control of Iraq’s oil. By waging a war against Iraq we are also waging a war against the hundreds of millions of people in the Arab world and putting ourselves in a weakened position to deal with the growing challenges presented by North Korea and globalization. The Muslim religion does not believe in turning the other cheek, instead it believes in an eye for an eye, and we need to understand that the Arab world will do all it can to avenge those killed in a war with Iraq. The negative potential consequences of a war with Iraq seem to greatly outweigh anything positive that could result. We cannot let the United States get involved in another fiasco like Vietnam because of the tunnel syndrome of President Bush and the sycophants who surround him.We need to make our voices heard if we oppose this war! In a democratic society silence is consent! Don’t let this war happen if you oppose it! Fight it!Trevor CovingtonSenior, Asian Studies and Behavioral Science and Health
