Oct. 11, 2002-Oct. 18, 2002-Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader and rock band Everclear headlined a wildly successful inaugural Rock The Vote campaign at the U.
Nearly 20,000 students on campuses across the country registered to vote through the Rock The Vote campaign, and the 2,000 students from the U that registered were second most in the country.
Initially, the Associated Students of the University of Utah planned on charging students to see Everclear and Ralph Nader, but ASUU senior staff members thought charging would be a poor use of student fees.
“If ASUU can do something of this magnitude, then why not? We realized that the money wasn’t ours, it was the students’. So why not spend it on the students?” ASUU Chief of Staff Heidi Spilker said in early October.
The decision turned out to be a wise one for all sides, as more than 2,000 students turned out to see Ralph Nader and Everclear brought in 3,000.
The event was so successful that plans are in the works for next year’s Rock The Vote, which ASUU administrators hope to extend over a period of months.
