The latest addition to the U’s department of military science graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and Harvard, served in Desert Storm and worked at the Pentagon.
On June 1, Maj. Edwin Frederick accepted his new role as Department Chairman of Military Science.
“I am very happy to be here. I’m taking over a very good program,” he said.
Along with department chairman, Frederick’s other titles at the U include battalion commander and professor of military science.
He will instruct ROTC seniors in their last course before they become commissioned in the U.S. Army.
“I’ll help them make the final transition from college senior to lieutenant,” he said.
Frederick plans to continue to make the ROTC program a visible and positive part of the U community.
“My belief is that the ROTC should enhance a student’s college experience. We believe that we are a positive influence here on campus,” he said.
Along with graduating from West Point and receiving his MBA from Harvard Business School, Frederick was a professor of Economics at West Point and worked as a program analyst in the Army Budget Office at the Pentagon.
“When it comes to officers in the U.S. Army, he is America’s best,” said Lt. Col. Ronald E. Fischer, recruiting officer at the U. “He brings a wealth of military experience, having qualified as an airborne ranger and served as a cavalry unit commander. He has been stationed abroad both in Berlin during the time of unification and the Middle East during the Gulf War.”
According to Fischer, applicants for Frederick’s position submitted resumes to a competitive selection board at Cadet Command last year. The board met in August and awarded Frederick his first position of choice-at the U.
Frederick has also been selected for promotion to lieutenant colonel, which he expects to receive before fall classes begin.
“I am proud of what we do here and I am fortunate in coming here. We have a great reputation in cadet command-for quality of Army officers that we’ve been producing,” Frederick said. “I am looking forward to the fall.”
