New ‘Buzz’ Surrounds U Soccer Team
According to Soccer Buzz magazine, the U women’s soccer team has brought in the ninth-best recruiting class in the West Region this year.
Rankings were announced Wednesday by the soccer mag, which also pronounced the Utes’ incoming class as the 37th-best group in the entire country.
The rankings are not only the best in the Mountain West Conference this year, but are also the best in the history of the school’s soccer program.
The team brought in ten players to join the Ute squad, including U.S. Youth National Team member Adele Letro.
U Skiiers Honored With Banner…and a Pontiac
The NCAA will soon recognize the national title run of the U ski team. The Utes will be honored with a banner in the Hall of Champions in the Indianapolis area. The banner will hang for one year before it is officially given to the University of Utah.
As a separate honor, the Utes will also be featured on the NCAA’s first-ever “Traveling Trophy,” which recognizes all Division I, Division II and Division III national champions.
The “trophy” is, in fact, not really a trophy at all. New NCAA Corporate Champion Pontiac has donated a custom-painted car that will feature team logos of each champion. The car will travel across the nation to major events and NCAA championships as part of the NCAA Beyond the Game Tour, presented by CBS Sports.
Former Ute Catches on With Midwest League Team
Wick Udy, a former catcher for the U baseball team who hit .335 with 21 RBI in his first and only season with the team, has found a home with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League (A), an Appleton, Wisc.-based farm team of the MLB’s Seattle Mariners.
Udy signed with the Mariners organization last month and participated in a development program in Arizona before signing on with the Timber Rattlers. He recently moved to Wisconsin with his wife and child.
