Driving a car around campus is about to become a little less of a headache, at least compared to the last few months.
From the Union Loop to Wasatch Drive, U construction is coming to an end, and should be all but complete by the beginning of Fall Semester, according to Joseph Harman, manager of U Campus Design and Construction Services.
Of the road projects taken on by campus design this summer, “all of the paving will be done…except for the three projects in Health Sciences,” each of which won’t start until next month, Harman said.
After the semester begins, the only remaining aspect of the projects will be minor touch ups-nothing that should affect traffic, Harman said.
During the fall, campus design will undertake many building projects in Health Sciences, like the new medical school, but minimal traffic concerns are anticipated.
While U senior Phill Jensen has definitely noticed the road construction over the months, he says others may have felt the effects more than him.
“It hasn’t really affected me much,” said the biology major.
He may be glad to see construction come to an end, but “I’m going to be happy when they’re done with TRAX,” Jensen said.
That date is also in the near future.
According to Project Manager Tom Christensen, Sept. 29 is the date scheduled for the grand opening of the U’s new TRAX stations.
Besides the Rice-Eccles Stadium station, which is already complete and functioning, stations on South Campus Drive, Wasatch Drive and Medical Drive will open.
Test runs of trains will be conducted in the month before regular service on the new section of track begins.
