On Monday, Debra Daniels began her tenure as director of the Women’s Resource Center. Daniels is replacing outgoing director Kathy Brooks, and hopes to make a positive impact on both the center as well as the U campus.
With the implementation of a new director, there are sure to be changes made within the center.
This leadership change provides an excellent opportunity for the center to adjust to the ever changing needs of the U community, and specifically the women on campus.
Daniels has already cited some of the changes that she would like to make on an ideological level.
Daniels has said that she would like to increase diversity. As such, she is looking at what is and is not being offered to women on campus in hopes of filling in any gaps.
Additionally, Daniels has talked of creating new alliances with men.
She hopes that the center can also be a resource for men to appeal to, in an effort to support women.
Transitions generally can be difficult and rocky. Hopefully, that will not be the case with the transition taking place at the Women’s Resource Center. For with transition comes opportunity.
The ideological changes that Daniels has talked about are exactly what the center needs. Hopefully, she will be able to follow through on her goals and create change for the better.
It is important that the Women’s Resource Center continually speaks to the ears of new audiences on campus. It must do so with a clear message that all students can somehow relate to.
In the same vein, the center should continue to focus on outreach to the community in order to expand its net of services. Many students can and will benefit from the services that the center offers. It is important that students are aware of such services.
As such, visibility of the center will always be important. As the center moves forward, it should look to increase visibility and awareness.
The Women’s Resource Center has long been an integral part of the U community. With the changing of administration, there are no indications that this will change.
Ideally, the center can stay true to its legacy established in the past, while living up to its aspirations for the future.
