All freshmen must remember their first semester of high school, when the walls were just a little bigger and finding class was a little harder if in the wrong hall.
Welcome to the U and its more than 100 buildings.
The Union is one building that nearly every student will come to know. This building includes a cafeteria, with several different menu options. The Union hosts many campus events such as career days.It is home to the Center for Disability Services, Center for Ethnic Student Affairs, International Center, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, the Women’s Resource Center and many other student-oriented offices, including the Dean of Students office.
In addition to the Union centers, the first floor has a bowling alley, a billiards room, video games and a lounge area where students can watch the news on a big-screen TV.
The Student Services Building is located in the middle of campus, just a short walk west of the Union.
This building is the home of such departments as Admissions, Alcohol and Drug Education Center, Financial Aid, Registrar’s Office, University College and the University Counseling Center.
Open wallets and the cha-ching of registers are the norm in the U Bookstore. That’s right folks, they’re just waiting for your money.
On top of text books, the bookstore sells magazines, snacks, books, school supplies and that bright red sweater every fan wears to U football games.
The Marriott Library is another popular place. The library offers study resources, visual and audio media and a quiet place to study.
The University Wasatch Clinic is where a student will find the Student Health Department. Here, students apply for health insurance and receive basic health services.Flu shots are available in the fall.
The Huntsman Center is the home to the U’s Athletic Department and the Ute basketball and gymnastics teams. This building will become an affordable student-meeting ground later in the year.
Aside from being the stadium in which the opening and closing ceremonies of the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Winter Games were held, Rice-Eccles Stadium is also the home of the U football team.
Although the loss of coach Ron McBride was a sad event for many, the new addition of Urban Meyer has brought some excitement that U officials hope can fill up the stadium.
These are just some of the buildings that will probably be visited by most students, regardless of their varying fields of study.
Which isn’t to say, however, that there are not other buildings that enhance students’ academic life.
Buildings that focus on one specific college, such as the Language and Communication Building, the College of Law and Orson Spencer Hall will be a second home to students of those respective majors.
Other frequented buildings on campus are the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Natural History and Kingsbury Hall, where a student can look for artistic adventures. To find these, and other buildings, go to www.utah.edu and click on the link at the top called ‘Campus Map.’ There are many ways this map can help you find the directions to the building of your choice, including an interactive location finder.
