The new TRAX line extension will be finished this fall. The line allows students, faculty and the public to ride to the Health Sciences Center on Medical Drive.
The line, which has been under construction since May 16, 2002, is on schedule and will be available for public use on Sept. 29.
Many who work on upper campus hope the new line will alleviate parking conflicts.
The construction on North Campus Drive has left the department with fewer parking lots.
The biggest parking problems are on upper campus in the Health Sciences Center.
Alma Allred, director of U Commuter Services said, “We’re hoping that it will have a large impact on upper campus. It probably won’t have a big impact on lower campus.”
The Medical Center Light Rail Transit Project is a $89.4 million, 1.5-mile light rail line extending from Rice-Eccles Stadium to the U Health Sciences Center, according to a statement on the Utah Transit Authority’s Web site.
It includes three new stops, one at the LDS Institute of Religion on South Campus Drive, one at Fort Douglas and it ends at a stop in front of what will be the new Moran Eye Center. The new stations will feature public art displays designed and constructed by U students J. Bernie Johnson, Cody Dingus, James Nielson and Yoshikazu Kono.
