The U is home to the only Materials Science and Engineering program in the state of Utah.
Upon entering the program, students choose an area of specialization. Options are broad, said departmental Secretary Mary Anne Davies. “Because MSE crosses over into many other fields, students have a wide range of choices, from medical and dental school, sports research and development and law school,” she said.
Local companies, such as Black Diamond, Bard Access Systems and Ceramatec, have hired program graduates.
The department is small, which “allows faculty and staff to get to know each of our students,” Davies said. Also, “We offer plenty of scholarship opportunities and lab jobs are available as well,” she said.
Students complete a senior project at the end of the program.
“Students collaborate with a professor of their choice to develop and execute a project in their area of specialization,” Davies said.
Past projects include snowboard designs, cancer detection and armor building. The projects are presented to the U community and friends and family of the students at a senior banquet each year.
The department will hold an open house Oct. 11 in the Engineering and Mines Classroom Building.
Organizers will offer games, interactive demonstrations and lab tours. High school students and current U students are invited.
“Students will be able to learn about the department program,” Davies said. “In addition, students will be able to speak one-on-one with faculty, our adviser and MSE students.”
The department will also offer a cash scholarship of up to $1,500 to a student at the event who matriculates in the program.
