Want to Become a Ute?After a disappointing year, the U softball team is looking to reload and try to regain its 2002 form, when the team won the Mountain West Conference Championship.In order to round out the roster, the team will hold an open tryout at Ute Field on Aug. 20 from 2-3 p.m.
Soccer Field Goes Under the KnifeIn order to make Ute Field more accessible and fan friendly, the complex is being renovated and new concessions, ticketing and restroom facilities, plus a new state-of-the-art lighting system, will be ready by Nov. 1, just in time for the MWC Championships.Other changes to the complex include a pedestrian mall which will connect to the University Medical Center TRAX Line. The walkway should be completed by Sept. 29.All the renovations are being funded by the Katherine W. Dumke and Ezekiel R. Dumke Jr. Foundation. The foundation donated $550,000 to complete the project.
Three-Peat in the Cards?After winning the Mountain West Conference tournament for the second consecutive time last season, the U volleyball team is pegged to once again take the regular season title in 2003, according to the recently released preseason coaches poll.The Utes will look to senior Kim Turner, the preseason Player of the Year, along with juniors Kelsie Kartchner and Lyndsey Henderson to provide leadership needed for the team to win a third consecutive conference title.
Mountain West Honors Ute Scholar-AthletesThe scholar-athlete honor is given by the Mountain West Conference to those players who have earned a GPA of at least 3.5 and have competed in at least one varsity event.
