Finding a job in today’s economy isn’t easy, but U Career Services lends a hand to those interested.
Career Services held its annual Student Employment and Volunteer Fair in the Union Ballroom on Wednesday afternoon.
Unlike October’s Career Fair, the event was geared toward those looking for a part-time job, said career service counselor Julie Swaner.
“The main focus is to allow students to find a decent job while they’re in school,” she said.
With 34 tables set up with that purpose in mind, Swaner said the fair is a good opportunity for students to earn a steady income while still taking classes.
“The employers here today aren’t looking for entry-level career students. They’re looking for people to work specific shifts at specific times, but they still offer some really great benefits,” Swaner said.
Among those in attendance at the annual fair were the Delta Center, ARUP Laboratories, UPS, Office Depot and Farmers Insurance Group.
Though this year’s event boasted 34 employers, Swaner said that number is lower than it has been in years past.
“We’ve certainly felt the lack of recruitment at our fairs and in our office,” she said.
But, Swaner says, students looking for a part-time job or supplemental income have an easier time finding an opportunity than those looking for entry level positions.
“The people here today are looking for a warm, intelligent body. Someone who is willing to work and willing to learn,” she said.
