Interesting. The team ranked dead last in the country comes to town and we draw the eighth largest crowd in stadium history. I’m not sure how that fails to impress, but hey, I think [Tye Smith’s] Aug. 29 article, “Local crowd failed to impress,” failed to impress [me], so I guess that’s how it goes.
For the first time in years the student section was full, and the fans seemed pretty into it from my perspective.
Do I think U fans can cheer louder and show more enthusiasm?
Definitely.
But if you call the game against the 117th-ranked team in the nation a “big-time” game, you might need to learn a little more about football.
Let’s see how many fans we get to the Cal and Oregon games.
Then we can talk about fans reacting to “big-time” games.
I know we think we have to compare ourselves to BYU in everything we do, but the fact is before last year they hadn’t experienced a losing record since 1973. The tradition is a little stronger, and there are simply more Zoobies out there. If we want to truly rival their program, it will take more than simply changing coaches and advertising a more exciting offense.
Anyway, I just thought your article lacked perspective and was quite negative.
