The student government plans to make the student experience better this Fall Semester by hosting campaign parties to make sure that students know everything their tuition is paying for and how to get their money’s worth out of the U.
Some of the specific dates have yet to be determined, but the leaders of the Associated Students of the University of Utah are set to host a series of sporadically spaced campaign parties outside of the Union.
The student leaders intend on having tables with free food and handouts of information for students to consume and digest.
“It’s just an opportunity for us to help students get aware about what the issues are without actually campaigning for votes,” said Lorraine Evans, ASUU Student Outreach director.
“We would like to let (students) know what we think ASUU is doing,” she said.
John Poelman, ASUU vice president, said that many campus services that students pay for are not used.
By throwing campaign parties, he added, they will effectively inform the masses of students returning in the fall.
“The tutoring is subsidized as well as some of the child-care services…we have really low rates,” Poelman said.
“There is $80,000 available for student clubs and organizations,” Poelman added.
The parties start Sept. 12-17 and are slated to occur every other month.
If students miss the campaign parties or are looking for a different way of learning about upcoming student government sponsored events, ASUU has an online alternative called U-Life.
U-Life acts as both a calendar for U-hosted events and activities and as a place for students to post or advertise their own events.
Poelman said that ASUU plans to place an oversized calendar in the west entrance lobby of the Marriott Library.
At least three campus events should be updated every day on the calendar.
Poelman worries that if students do not act upon some of the discounts and campus freebees, the student administration will simply sit on the money until the next round of elections.
