The Vacation
The Vacation
Warner Bros./WEA
Three out of five stars
Classic rock is the name of the game on The Vacation’s self-titled debut.
In addition to its formulaic process, The Vacation injects a little bit of a raw, punchy bass to give the music some edge and make it sound harder than it actually is.
The Vacation spices up each track with some nice hooks and catchy tunes, but the music is hedged in by pop sensibilities so that corporate radio stations and girls will buy into its sexually driven rock (what does a microphone down the pants even mean? Who’s really doing the singing here?).
Granted, the lead singer has a good voice and gives the music character, but the background vocals sometimes get in the way on a couple of tracks, as does the common repetition of certain phrases such as “trash,” “liquid lunch” and something about tasting another person’s “cherry cola.” At least, that’s what I thought he said.
All in all, The Vacation is purely straightforward, with 4/4 time signatures and a “come get in my pants” attitude. Go to www.thevacationmusic.com to listen to a couple tracks for free.
As for me, I’ll take my vacation elsewhere.
