Autumn is a perfect time of year for a trip to the English countryside-but since we all have midterms to take and papers to write, another option is to attend Pioneer Theatre Company’s presentation of ‘Pride and Prejudice.’
A beloved classic, Jane Austen’s novel has been transformed into a play by James Maxwell, with revisions by Alan Stanford. PTC Director Charles Morey said, “Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is one of the most romantic, charming, intelligent, funny and emotionally rich novels ever written and this stage adaptation is equally delightful.”
First published in 1813, the themes and struggles of “Pride and Prejudice” are relevant to modern life. The first line of the book reads: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
The feminists among us might respond with an indignant “humph” of some sort, but we’ve all seen it happen. This is a classic, Meg Ryan-esque love story, filled with the grace and charms of a more genteel era.
