College is an excellent time to challenge our minds and learn about many different perspectives. The knowledge we gain here will be a valuable asset for the rest of our lives, and therefore should be the primary focus of the college experience.
However, there is more value and knowledge that can be learned at college than only that which is taught in the classroom.
At a university, there are many opportunities to get involved in different clubs or organizations that can supplement the knowledge that is taught in class. In many ways the student life experience can be just as valuable.
There are many students that question the importance of getting involved on campus.
For me, I believe that there are three main reasons why it is valuable to get involved. The first reason is obvious-it’s fun. Some of the greatest experiences of my life have come through the organizations and clubs that I have been involved with on campus.
After a grueling string of tests or a late night finishing homework, it is nice to have something on campus to help blow off some steam.
The second reason I would recommend getting involved on campus is that it is a great opportunity to make a difference. Some university clubs are geared toward having a good time, some toward providing service or leadership opportunities, and many do both. Talk to someone in the Bennion Center about a recently completed project. It might range from service at a local elementary, to sending students abroad to teach, to supporting people in underprivileged neighborhoods.
Or, talk to students who have participated in the recent welcome week activities held at the Residence Halls. I think that whoever you talk to would agree that being able to look back and know that you made a difference in some small way is a priceless opportunity.
The final reason that I would suggest getting involved on campus is that you will make friendships that will last a lifetime. By far the most valuable aspect of getting involved in campus organizations has been the people that I have met.
While I know that my college experience will one day come to a close, I also know that there are people that I will always be able to call friends.
With hundreds of student groups and organizations on campus, there really is an opportunity for everybody.
The activities that I have pursued certainly have been perfect for me, but might not be the best fit for somebody else. But, I am sure that if students are proactive and look around, they will be able to find the perfect niche for them.
