Pride Week at the U is just more than a month away and students and staff at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center are working to finalize the week’s events.
In conjunction with the Queer Student Union, Queer Students of Color and UsWerve, the center will host a variety of events for Pride Week. A fund-raiser dinner, a pride dance, dance performances on the Union Patio and a queer dog show are just a few of the events scheduled during the week of Oct. 15.
The dinner will be held Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Jewish Community Center. Funds from the event will go to the center for future events throughout the year and to pay for the cost of Pride Week, said Bonnie Owens, an intern at the LGBT Resource Center.
The cost of the dinner is $65 for the public and $40 for students. Owens said the center is encouraging departments at the U and local businesses to sponsor tables at the dinner to allow more students to go. Anyone interested in attending the dinner should call or visit the LGBT Resource Center in Union Room 409.
The center will welcome a number of guest speakers during the week, including keynote speaker Andrew Jolivette, an author and professor at San Francisco State University. He will speak Thursday, Oct. 18. A location for the event, which will be free to students, has not been selected. Jolivette will follow the discussion with a book signing and a lunch with students. The Resource Center is also taking submissions for a student art show that will run the entire week in the Union. In addition to the art show, the Resource Center is looking for student musicians to participate in an interfaith service scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 16.
Students interested in submitting their art or student musicians interested in participating in the interfaith service are encouraged to contact the Resource Center, Owens said.
The Marriott Library will team up with the Resource Center and will feature a special queer book collection for the entire month of October.
