Joyce Mitchell was appointed to the position of associate vice president for health sciences information technology last month. Mitchell will direct and coordinate clinical and information technology services for the U’s health sciences.
Mitchell came to the U two years ago as a professor of bioinformatics and became chair of the medical school’s department of biomedical informatics. Informatics is the study of how computer and other information is managed and processed.
“Dr. Mitchell was chosen because of her experience in applying biomedical informatics to support educational, research and clinical computing,” said Lorris Betz, senior vice president for health sciences, in a statement.
Mitchell said her experience makes her well-suited to coordinate information processing for the U’s health sciences.
“I know a lot of the people who I will be working with, and I already have some ideas for forming more councils and working in a more coordinated fashion,” Mitchell said.
The position has been changed since Pierre Pincetl, Mitchell’s predecessor, passed away from cancer last year.
“They decided to reconfigure his position somewhat,” she said.
The job is being cut in half for two people to work on. Mitchell will cover the academic-based half of the work.
