Editor:
I was rather disappointed by the front page of today’s Chrony (April 15), specifically the story “Students relieved by professor’s dismissal.”
I am a student of Richard Sherman’s political analysis class and was part of the group of students that asked the political science department to, please, make our professor come to class. The department listened to our complaints and took action with Sherman. Sherman’s absenteeism continued. The department stepped up to the plate and went to the mattresses for us, resulting in the fallout to which the whole school is now privy.
Department chairs have divided up Sherman’s class load and teach those students themselves, and they are doing a top-notch job. The applause I remember giving was to Matthew Burbank, when he told us the measures the department was taking to help us out.
I’m relieved that we have departments that stand by their students when the chips are down. The situation with Sherman was regrettable, and although it was a bad experience, I wish him all the best.
But the political science department is putting in a lot of time and energy to help out these classes, and I am deliriously happy with the measures that the department has taken to help out our class. They are doing a fine job of trying to turn these classes around without a whole lot of time to do it.
We are being taken care of, in a big way. There’s no reason to kick a man when he is down, so let’s stop reporting the situation to the local paper and just let this thing drop, shall we?
