It’s about time.
In June of 2007, The Chronicle published an article on a campus climate pledge that U President Michael Young had yet to sign (“U hasn’t joined campus climate pledge,” June 18, 2007). The pledge, which would have the U work toward climate neutrality by doing an emissions inventory and then develop a plan within two years of how it would work toward the neutrality, had been signed by every other Utah university until now.
After sitting on Young’s desk for nearly a year, now, in the convenient wake of Earth Day, he is ready to sign.
Whether the signing was a move motivated by timing or not, we are happy to see Young committing himself and the U community to working toward a better and greener earth.
We all make an impact on the earth in our daily lives, and now, the U is committed to make that impact a positive one within the next two years.
Now it is up to the U community to not only ensure that the administration holds itself to the university-wide standards set in the climate pledge, but that each person does his or her own personal part to eliminate waste and emissions at the U.
