Utah Book & Magazine is a tiny little place tucked out of sight in plain view of the University Trax line moving from Library to Gallivan Plaza. Inside are books of all kinds stacked to the ceiling: ancient magazines and shopping catalogues, a porn section tastefully cordoned off behind a plywood door and a whole room choked with comic books of all shapes, sizes and ages. The owner is an old comic book hand. He once told me a story about a trip he took to Vegas in the late seventies for a comic book convention. Something you get at the checkout, besides cheap books, is a story or two. Is that cute clerk at Sam Weller’s going to tell you about the time she got mugged when buying used comics from a shady character in a bad part of Las Vegas? Probably not.
