A glitch in the Union’s fire alarm system sent students streaming outside for the third time in two days Friday afternoon.
The Union’s fire sprinkler and alarm systems are undergoing multimillion dollar renovations, which Union Director Whit Hollis said are causing the systems to trip up.
“We still don’t know why,” Hollis said. “Of course we’re very concerned, but the alarm technicians have been here working to solve the problem.”
Hollis said communication errors between the new and old systems are likely causing the false alarms, which have resulted in three visits from the Salt Lake City Fire Department, U Police Department and U Fire Marshall Michael Halligan.
U freshman Scott Allen said that after three alarms in two days, Friday’s alarm didn’t concern him.
“When they first went off on Thursday, I went outside with my friends,” Allen said. “But I kind of figured it was another false alarm (on Friday). I just kept eating my lunch.”
