The fall music festival Redfest is named to represent U school spirit, but this year the name Greenfest wouldn’t be far off.
The Associated Students of the University of Utah’s Presenter’s Office will be promoting sustainable lifestyles at the annual music concert Sept. 18. Besides featuring Jewish rapper Matisyahu, as well as supporting performances from Brother Ali and Kalai, Redfest will also have a recycling-themed fashion show, a dumpster dive and tote bag designing. There will also be a showing of a 20-minute film, “The Story of Stuff,” which takes a look at the negative sides of production and consumption.
Art vendors will be present on the second day of the festival, including a “green” art gallery meant to encourage artists to be sustainable in their art. The art show will run for two more weeks after the opening day in the Union Student Lounge. The gallery includes art from students and local artists.
Presenter’s Office Board Director Amanda Mecham said they chose Matisyahu to headline the event because they’d always wanted to have a reggae theme.
“These artists usually have some social cause and would be entertaining for students,” Mecham said.
There will also be contests that will reward students with a chance to meet Brother Ali and Matisyahu in person.
U students can purchase discounted tickets for the concert at the front desk of the Union with their UCard for $5 and a $1 service fee.
