Dancing clowns, male strippers and singing cowgirls all took the stage Thursday night in the Union Ballroom for a lighthearted Homecoming Week event.
Songfest, a U tradition dating back several decades, is a major highlight for Homecoming Week as fraternities, sororities and other campus groups perform humorous songs poking fun at one another.
Each house spent weeks working on its performance, whether it was the “Grease”-themed songs of Alpha Chi Omega or the chaotic cacophony that was the Sigma Phi Epsilon performance.
Members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity estimated they spent a total of 20 hours fine-tuning their performance.
“We’ve been working on our song for about two weeks,” said Christian Samberg, vice president of the Pike house. “The lyrics took the longest.”
KUTV reporter Rod Decker hosted the night and ridiculed the greek houses one by one.
Terri Jackson, more commonly referred to as the “crazy lady,” also attended Songfest. Along with judging the songs, Jackson jumped on stage and performed some of her famous dance moves from the third quarter of the U football games.
“Students love the crazy lady,” said Senior Class President Madison Warren. “She’s so awesome.”
Homecoming king and queen Brandon Patterson and Adrienne Carey also helped judge the event.
The winners of the house decorating competition were announced at the event. Sorority Chi Omega and fraternity Sigma Chi took first for Greek Row.
After a night of inter-house rivalry, fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha and sorority Delta Gamma placed first in the Songfest competition as the ultimate Greek Row singers, dancers and trash-talkers.
