Whip out your pen and paper because it’s time to start writing.
The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is holding its second annual writing competition to encourage U students from all backgrounds to write a response to a work of art in the museum.
“We are encouraging U of U students to look at our art and be inspired,” said Jenny Woods, campus outreach coordinator at the museum.
The topic of the contest is “Intersections: Art and…,” which leaves room for students to interpret works of art any way they wish, Woods said. The point of the contest is to see how art can intersect with the different backgrounds of students.
“I think it is good to get students involved in art and the museum,” said Emily Haws, a junior in art history. Entries can be in the form of a written response, poem, song or story, but cannot be more than 2,000 words, and are due before 5 p.m. on Oct. 31.
The museum will award two, first place cash prizes of $150 to undergraduates for fiction and non-fiction categories. Honorable mentions in each category will receive a one-year membership to the museum. One graduate student will receive $150 for his or her essay.
