Amy Ray (Of the Indigo Girls)
Feb. 6, 7 p.m.
The Avalon (3605 South State St.)
$15
The planets must have aligned8212;or maybe just by pure coincidence8212; because this week’s live music picks are dominated by girl power. One half of the famous lesbian duo the Indigo Girls is set to take the stage at the Avalon Theater on February 6, with the promise of delivering socially-concious, empowering feminine grooves driven by gritty guitar. Amy Ray has been releasing music on her own since 2001 and 2008’s Didn’t It Feel Kinder is still hot off the press. Amy Ray has been a champion of just about every social cause imaginable, from gay rights to abortion rights to American Indian rights and so on. In a gay-friendly city like ours, expect a big turnout for this one.
Yo! Majesty
Feb. 7, 9 p.m.
Urban Lounge (241 S. 500 East)
$8/$10
Comin’ straight outta Tampa, rap duo Shunda K and Jwl. B make up Yo! Majesty, a female rap group that’s just gangsta enough to give T.I. a run for his money. Yo! Majesty unabashedly spits rhymes about running game on b****** and getting f***** up in the club. They sound quite similar to former Three 6 Mafia rapper Gangsta Boo but fueled by energetic, euro-trash club rhythms. It’s a sound that might wear on you after a while but perfect for a night of excessive drinking and mindless crowd movement.
Katy Perry
Feb. 10, 6:30 p.m.
In the Venue (579 W. 200 South)
$18/$20
Katy Perry is the only one of this week’s trio of artists who doesn’t actually prefer a woman to a man and she just so happens to be the least talented as well. Go figure that her ticket price is twice what the other two cost. Sprung to fame off of gimmicky pop songs, Katy Perry should be nothing less than a painful example of what not to do when the music industry machine tries to make a pop star. Still, this sexy daughter of a preacher is laughing all the way to the bank. Props to Gym Class Hero’s Travis McCoy for keeping this impostor comfortable at night. Between all three of these options, you’re sure to find at least one sound that will leave you shakin’ in your boots.
